After finishing the Article, "A 13-Year-Old's Slavery Analogy Raises Some Uncomfortable Truths in School", the issue of education and slavery came up. The article was about a girl who wrote an essay after reading "The Narrative Life Of Fredrik Douglass" about how the education she is receiving is like modern day slavery. This concept intrigued me because the education I receive doesn't even compare to slavery. But after reading the article I found that she had very valid points that were worth bringing attention to.
The author is trying to say that if this 13-year-old girl feels like a slave at school, than that school needs to be evaluated and something needs to change. In the article it said, "Williams wrote that overcrowded, poorly managed classrooms prevent real learning from happening and thus produces the same results as Mr. Auld's outright ban."This is saying that her learning environment was so bad that she was learning as much as someone who's education was banned. It also says, "Instead of truly teaching, most teachers simply 'pass out pamphlets and packets" and then expect students to complete them independently, Williams wrote.'" This is just another piece explaining that the teachers' methods of teaching are not affective and it would be no different to have education banned than to continue going on with education like this. This article is showing that modern day slavery still exists in some lives, like Jada Williams'.
I immediately was shocked by the fact that this girl could compare her education to slavery because that is a very bold statement, but then she proved her point sophisticatedly and elaborately and I saw the similarities. I wouldn't compare my schooling to slavery. Slavery was such an awful thing there are few things that compare. Although I completely understand the feelings she feels when she talks about how some classrooms are run, I don't completely agree with her comparing it to slaver. Yes, this situation may be unfair. Yes, there are so many things wrong with the education system. But no, in my opinion it doesn't compare with slavery. No matter how awful the school she was in was, slavery was worse.
