I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Even though at times it seemed odd how they spoke in Shakespearian language in modern times in some parts of the movie, I thought it was very artsy and creative.
While watching the movie, I took notes on the use of color. I found that many times throughout the movie, both Romeo and Juliet found happiness, peace, relaxation or quiet through the water. One thing I noticed was that when Juliet's mother was calling her, she had her face dipped in the sink. She seemed to want to stay there and it gave her a few more seconds of relaxation before her mother hassled her. There was also a point in the beginning of the movie where Romeo does the exact same thing, and Romeo and Juliet don't know each other yet and I think this is Baz Luhrmann'a way of hinting at their fate.
There was also the part scene, where Romeo and Juliet meet. I noticed that they meet on either sides of a fish tank (filled with WATER) and they immediately fall in love and can't take their eyes off one another an this is Baz's second clue to their fate.
Then their is the scene in Juliet's pool, where they make out. This is just another moment when water brings Romeo and Juliet together.
So in all these scenes water is bringing piece and happiness. But I noticed whenever they were near water there was fighting. The scene where Benvolio is killed is near the ocean. The scene where Romeo Kills Tybalt, Tybalt walls back into water.
So overall, my theory is that when the scene takes place in the water, everyone is at peace, but when the scene takes place near the water, there is no peace at all.
I would have to disagree. When Romeo and Juliet first meet, they look at each other through a fish tank and that was romantic and peaceful. When the were running away from each other, there was no water. Same goes for when they are in the pool. They are happy and at peace in the pool. I agree with the fact that there isn't always peace, but there also isn't always hatred and violence.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with everything you said! I really liked you took a few different examples from different scenes and related them all! But I think maybe you could of thought of like different meanings for the colors, rather than just like one more literal meaning. Really really great job though!
ReplyDeleteI really loved how thoughtful you were. I couldn't have said it better! I love the way you actually gave examples and anecdotes, to support you statements. A+!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Isabel, I think that while sometimes it means hatred there is room for it to mean love and peace and beauty. Great job nonetheless!
