"The Debate Over Immigration"

This article is about new, and old, immigration laws and how it effects one boy in particular. All of the debate about the borders, and the documents and all of the things that make it hard to immigrate should not be put in place. I think this because after reading this article, you really see how it can effect someone's life and just how ridiculous some of the requirements are.

The boy, Anthony, in this article is ll and his parents immigrated to the US to find work. Anthony was born in the US which makes him a citizen, but since his parents aren't, he is constantly worrying about them beng deported. Such a serious matter like this should not worry an 11 year old child who should be enjoying his childhood. All of the laws put in place make it almost impossible to cross the border, and if you make it, extremely difficult to become a citizen. With all of the laws put in place, America is not what Anthony's family had in mind when they thought they were going to move to America to find jobs and money and an easy life. Instead they are constantly worried about being caught and getting sent back to Mexico.

I often wonder what the world would be like if everyone could trust one another. Or if everyone wouldn't be so greed and share their money. If everyone kept only what they needed. If everyone only wanted to succeed and for others to succeed. There wouldn't be strict border laws, or poverty, or crime, or unemployed. Issues like this remind me that there is enough money in the world for everyone. There are enough jobs for everyone. There is enough trust for everyone. And with a law that doesn't allow freedom. There becomes less and less money, trust, and employment. People have to illegally cross the border instead of freely. People worry day-to-day about whether they will be in this country the next day.

People should be aware of the innocent people they effect when they support these laws. That is why I think the laws that make it so hard to become a part of our country should not be passed.

  2. I really like how you took the Scholastic News Magazine article and turned it into an issue you can discuss. And then you put a whole lot of awesome opinions in there!
