I am reading the book, Other Words for Love, by Lorraine Rosenthal. It is about a teenager living in Brooklyn whose sister moved out to get married to a boy her mother doesn't aprove of, her sister has two kids and major, dangerous mood swings, her best friend goes to a prep school in Manhattan and seems to be perfect, and she just got transfered to that school and feels she doesn't fit in at all. She feels she doesn't fit in anywhere. She has many problems in her life, but that is the biggest.
The main character in my book doesn't seem to fit in. She doesn't fit in with her mom, who often criticizes her sisters decisions which result in her making the main character's decisions for her. She doesn't fit in with her dad-she doesn't even connect to him at all. She doesn't fit in with her sister who always points out her flaws, or is too stressed out with her own life to even talk to her. She doesn't fit in with her brother-in-law, who treats her as a kid, but she is actually attracted to. She doesn't fit in at her old school, or the new one. And she especially doesn't feel that she fits in with her best friend anymore. Summer, her best friend since first grade, transferred to a private school and made new friends. Became popular, and only cared about looks and boys. The main character in my book feels completely disconnected with everything in her life, and that is the main conflict in her life.
I can partially relate. There have been times when I feel left out, but my problems have never been as extreme as not even fitting in with my family. I have felt left out on the first day of camp, when my friend makes new friends, when people share secrets. But feeling left our on a daily basis has never happened to me. Many people feel left out all the time. There are Probably people that I know, and go to school with that feel left out and can relate the the main character. I think this is upsetting because eveyrone has qualities in them that other people will enjoy, people just need to find them.
