Mockingbird What I Love About Caitlin

Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine is a heartfelt book about a girl with autism whose brother was killed in a school shooting.

I love how Caitlin is so young and innocent and can seem not so smart at sometimes, but really she is a brilliant young lady who has experienced way too much.

I love how Caitlin is so innocent yet so strong. She can one minute be hiding under the couch cushions, and the next talking about her brother, who recently died, in a way that can make other people walk away with something and her standing there unaffected because she knows how to cope and help others from the struggles she faced.

I love how Caitlin is smart, but so curious to learn more. Whenever she doesn't understand a word she will look it up in the dictionary, but also ask more than one person, and she doesn't give up until she learns what that word means. For example she wanted to know what closure meant. SHe looked it up and it didn't make sense. So she asked her dad, and her counselor and her friend Michael and when none of it made sense to her, she continued to think about it. She is very persistent and I also love that about her.

I love how Caitlin is witty even when she doesn't realize it and when others might not get it and even when it hurts other people's feelings.

I really like how her mind functions in a different way than everyone else's, but she can laugh, and love, and listen, and talk, and make friends even if these things are harder for her.

I love how she doesn't give up after all she has been through.
